Père David’s deer, also known as milu in China, truly was once the rarest deer species on Earth and survived a near-total extinction thanks to a remarkable international rescue effort and China’s decisive role in restoring the species to its homeland. The original wild milu vanished from China’s wetlands in the late 1800s and a few deer had been sent to European zoos, becoming the world’s only remaining population.
